Music Monday June 1st

  • Movement Game – In class, part of our musicianship time is spent on learning and embodying different sets of musical opposites.  Children, show your families how we move our bodies to reflect the changes in the music.  Below you will find the musical exercises for 2 sets of opposites: High/Low (illustrating the directionality on the piano keyboard) and Staccato/Legato (short & choppy/smooth & connected). Each week build upon these skills at home with different recordings that support the musical opposites. Play these new audio recordings for your child to move around the house to the music.  Piece #1: Piano/Forte – Shubert Moments Musicaux FMinor; Piece #2 Legato/Stacatto– Mendelssohn Songs Without Words
  • Listening & Playing Exercise – This week EC Pianist Eri Yamamoto performs another jazz classic: All the Things You Are, Jerome Kern and Tony Martin. What elements of music do you hear in her playing? How does the song make you feel?  Do you want to dance or rest? Smile or frown? This week Sherrine continues with our new style called a ballad with The Nearness of You. How is this ballad different from last week’s Detour Ahead?  How is it similar?  Is it faster or slower? How does it make you feel?  Presto or lento? What instruments do you think would be best to play along with Sherrine?

  • Instrument Play- We hope you’ve been enjoying trying out all different kinds of improvisations each week with your instruments at home. Continue to build off of the last few week’s improvisation exercise. Start again with  Play and Play as a warm up. Use body percussion (clapping, tapping your knees, stomping etc.) or shakers if you have them in the house. Now play along with Oren to this classical guitar piece.  Grab your shakers, drums, sticks (whatever you have on hand). Is it presto or lento?  Are there forte or piano moments, or both?  Once you’ve tried that, how is it similar to Spanish Romance from last week? How is it different?

  • Movement Exercise: Join Luisa with a Diller-Quaile favorite, The Ants Go Marching! This classic song is a great tune to move around to. Once you know it well, practice your rhyming with your child. Try playing around with the lyrics and see if you can create different rhymes to the verses!

  • Lullaby-This week Ian shares All the Pretty Horses with you with his friend Ruby! Grab your favorite stuffed friend and join him for this beautiful lullaby.
